You would think that when times get tough, the tough tighten their pockets. But it seems like more and more people are continuing to expand their collectibles and continue to bargain hunt for that "must have" antique item - especially in today's financial crisis.

Case in point - we were watching the news a few nights back, and there was a segment on consumers who are actively buying antiques and collectibles, regardless of the economic situation. It was apparent that no matter how tough the economy is -- there are people out there willing to shop for that bargain investment - and taking full advantage of those who are willing to sell their wares for a lot less just to turn some kind of profit.

In a time where there is job loss and housing foreclosures, naturally, there will be people looking to sell their possessions to make some fast money - and usually at a price well below the market value. This works especially advantageous to the buyer. As the economy picks back up, that bargain sale might turn out to evolve into a nice, little, healthy investment.

Collecting used to be the secret to investing in a bad economy - but not anymore. If you have the extra cash - now would be the time to start hitting garage sales, yard sales, physical and online auctions, thrift stores - check your classified ad section. Antiques that are in excellent condition tend to appreciate in time, so if you shop smart, you could pick up some great bargains you can enjoy now and maybe sell later for a nice profit. In the meantime, you can beautify your home or even yourself sporting some vintage jewelry. And best of all - it's an investment that you can "see" on a daily basis.
